Care

How to keep your natural Christmas tree looking its best for longer

Make a fresh cut

Cut 1–2 cm off the bottom of the trunk before setting up your tree.

Keep the tree stand filled with water.

A fresh natural Christmas tree can absorb about 1 litre of water per day.

Keep it away from heat sources.

Keep it away from radiators, fireplaces, and direct sunlight.

Choose the right size

Measure your space before visiting the grower.

What you may not know about your natural Christmas tree

10 x

An artificial tree can have up to 10 times the environmental impact.

Made from PVC and metal and often manufactured overseas, an artificial tree would need to be used for 20 years to offset its environmental footprint. In reality, the average lifespan is just 6 to 8 years.

Planted, trimmed, and cared for over a decade by a local grower. For every tree harvested, 1 to 3 new seedlings are planted.

Municipal collection, bird shelters, composting.
Natural Christmas trees are part of a complete cycle, where nothing goes to waste.

The choose-and-cut experience

Choose your own natural Christmas tree at the farm. A tradition passed down through generations.

The scent of pine in the crisp autumn air. Kids running between the rows of trees. That moment when you say, “This is the one.” It’s more than just buying a Christmas tree — it’s making memories. Every fall, Québec growers welcome families to their farms to enjoy this unique experience, right where the trees grow.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Do natural Christmas trees contribute to deforestation?

No. Natural Christmas trees are grown on dedicated tree farms, not harvested from natural forests. Like any other agricultural crop, they’re planted, cared for, harvested, and replanted. For every tree cut, 1 to 3 new seedlings are planted.

How long does a natural Christmas tree last indoors?

With proper care, a natural Christmas tree can last 4 to 6 weeks indoors. The keys are to make a fresh cut at the base before setting it up, place it in a water-holding stand, keep it away from heat sources, and check the water level daily.

What’s the difference between choosing your own tree at a farm and buying one at a tree stand?

With choose-and-cut, you visit a grower’s farm, pick your natural Christmas tree right from the field, and cut it down yourself. At a tree stand, you can choose from pre-cut natural Christmas trees at a convenient location near you. It’s quick and easy.

Is a natural Christmas tree really more eco-friendly than an artificial one?

Yes, in most cases. An artificial tree needs to be used for 15 to 20 years to offset its carbon footprint from manufacturing. However, the average artificial tree is used for only 6 to 8 years.

Is home delivery available for natural Christmas trees?

Some growers offer home delivery. Check the grower’s listing on the map above or contact them directly to find out if they deliver to your area.

What can you do with your natural Christmas tree after Christmas?

Take part in your municipality’s Christmas tree collection program, offered in January in most Québec communities. Your natural Christmas tree will be composted or turned into mulch. You can also leave it in your yard as a shelter for birds or compost it directly in your garden.
